Set amongst the rolling hills of Ruffy, Victoria, this compact alpine-style home was designed as a simple, considered retreat with a strong connection to its surroundings.

The one-bedroom home makes efficient use of its modest footprint, with an additional loft providing flexible space above the main living area. The loft is accessed via a custom-built timber ladder, adding both functionality and a crafted architectural detail to the interior.

Large windows frame views across the surrounding hills, while exposed, lime-washed rafters and custom timber joinery bring warmth and texture to the living spaces. Internal finishes combine natural timber linings with plaster, creating a balance between the character of the structure and a clean, understated interior.

The exterior combines radial-sawn timber cladding, sourced from seconds stock, with Colorbond, reflecting the project’s practical and resource-conscious approach to material selection.

Designed for year-round comfort, the home incorporates a combustion stove for winter heating and reverse-cycle air conditioning for summer cooling. An extensive timber deck extends the living space outdoors, leading to a stone-lined fire pit and seating area designed to make the most of the surrounding landscape.

The house is completely off-grid, incorporating solar hot water, rainwater storage and an independent waste treatment system. These systems allow the home to operate independently while reducing its reliance on conventional infrastructure.

A custom-made barn-style roller door completes the carport, adding a distinctive detail that complements the chalet-inspired character of the home.
